The online retail giant used a computer system to automatically track and fire hundreds of low productivity workers in the fulfilment centres, The Verge reports. 

 

The fulfilment centres are the engine of the company massive warehouses where workers track, pack, sort, and shuffle each order before sending it on its way to the buyer’s door. 

 

Well, in a nutshell, we are no longer be able to hide from the AI technology. 

 

What is artificial intelligence (AI)?

 

The literal definition of artificial intelligence (AI) could be really confusing (and boring), so I’ll explain it in a simpler way for you to understand.

 

AI is the programming of human intelligence process into machines, especially computer systems.

 

We have natural intelligence which is already there in us but machines only have the imitation of it.

 

There are two types of AI, the first one is weak AI, a system that is designed for a particular task. Virtual personal assistants such as Apple’s Siri, are a form of weak AI. 

 

Second is strong AI, a system with limited human cognitive abilities. When presented with an unfamiliar task, a strong AI system is able to find a solution without human intervention which eventually will cut down on employee productivity.

 

 

I don’t know about you, but pretty scary for me.

 

Impact of the AI world on employees

 

The rise of AI over the last few years has caused a fair amount of fearmongering about its potential impacts on society, especially working citizens.

 

There’s no denying that AI has the potential to create more jobs for humans allowing them to focus on tasks that require a human touch. However, it is certain that the implementation of AI will also result in a significant number of job losses.

 

Kai-Fu Lee, a pioneer in AI predicted that it will automate and potentially eliminate 40% of jobs within 15 years.

 

 

As of 2019 we already have driverless cars, robotics, payment systems, floor cleaner machines, and even the ability to comprehend languages!

 

It’s possible that cooks will be replaced by robotics. Let’s be real, it doesn’t require a 5-star chef to cook fast food burgers.

 

Occupations with no demand for human intelligence such as the transportation-related jobs are at much greater risk for displacement. Whereas jobs requiring social, emotional and literary abilities are at the lowest risk of displacement.

 

AI might cause major unemployment

 

According to Gartner, a global research and advisory firm, AI could create over 500,000 jobs in the United States. However, other analysts estimate that net job losses could number over 1 million if AI takes over parts of the workforce. 

 

Oh no, will jobs even exist in 2050?

 

Not only will repetitive administrative positions be handled by computer systems, but jobs that require less skill in places such as factories will also shift to machines.

 

This shift will terribly affect those who hold low-skill jobs. Low-income employees who have no qualification in higher education tend to hold these jobs and they will be the ones most impacted by the incorporation of AI into the workforce. 

 

For instance, driverless cars are already making their way onto the roads. Without the need for full-time human drivers, immigrants who hold many of these positions will be without work as computer systems replace them.

Well, not just that. In this highly competitive business environment, many companies are thinking about how to track employee productivity and efficiency. Then, AI technology comes at the right time. 

 

It can be the new way your boss spying on you. Sounds scary, right? 

 

Dozens of UK businesses are using AI to scrutinise staff behaviour minute-to-minute by harvesting data on who emails whom and when, who accesses and edits files and who meets whom and when. 

 

It will increase the pressure on workers who fear the judgement of the algorithm and change their work behaviours.

2. Critical thinking – People who can turn insightful data into insightful interpretations will be sought after due to the complexity and interconnectedness of various fields like computer science, engineering and biology.

 

3. Creativity – The quality of being able to get random creative ideas and the ability to build something out of ideas is a skill that will pay off now and in the future.

 

4. People management – Robots may acquire analytical and mathematical skills, but they can’t replace humans in leadership and managerial roles, that require people skills.

10. Cognitive flexibility – The ability to switch between different personas to accommodate to the challenge at hand will be important to be successful Be adaptable to situations where what you say or do needs to cater to the background of clients or higher management.

For now, the world is not dominated by AI yet so there’s still tons of jobs available. But the world is changing too fast, and AI technology is making its way into different aspects of our workplace.
